A Confluence of History & Art

After a long wait of three grief-laden uncertain years courtesy of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are back with our annual performing arts event — The Sacred River Festival.

Presented by The Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Memorial Charitable Trust, the Sacred River Festival celebrates Indian history, architecture, culture,
and performing arts.
The festival goes beyond performances to take a closer look at the creative ideas taking shape and how the artists prepare for it.

The Inception Story

A Swiss friend of Maharaja Richard Holkar suggested the idea of a festival that’ll reintroduce the Holkar legacy of promoting art and culture.

“He thought we should organise an event to preserve the architectural, cultural, and environmental heritage. After all, the royal courtyard would have seen several such performances. So I felt it to be a great idea to revive this tradition” says the enigmatic Holkar descendant, who takes a keen interest in the curation and presentation of the festival.

Theme Etymology

The theme for the upcoming festival is Shamya – Finding Peace.

The name Shamya finds its roots in the Sanskrit word sham — to be calm, tranquil, and pacified while the Hindi connotation refers to brotherhood, peace, and conciliation.

Despite the world struggling with injustice and suffering at various stages of life, we affirm that a positive state of mind is achievable through the reconciliation of the past and the present.
