Ahilyabai Holkar: Footsteps Across India
This February, Ahilya Fort is honoured to present the 23rd annual Sacred River Festival, dedicated this year to the memory of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar on her 300th birth anniversary.
Three centuries after her extraordinary life, she remains a beacon of social harmony, enlightened governance, and deeply rooted leadership.
Presented by The Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Charitable Memorial Trust and Ms. Mary McFadden, the festival brings together artists from regions across India touched by Ahilyabai’s vision and generosity.
Over four days, guests experience India’s rich performing traditions through music, dance, and storytelling. Mornings feature intimate lecture-demonstrations and dialogue, while evening performances unfold across Maheshwar’s evocative riverfront ghats, temples, and fort spaces — echoing the enduring footsteps of Ahilyabai across India.

Words from Our Director
Prince Richard Shivajirao Holkar
Over the last 22 years, The Sacred River Festival has presented a broad range of artists from all over India. This year we have chosen younger artistes from the State of Madhya Pradesh, wishing to give them the opportunity to share their art with our guests at Ahilya Fort and the citizens of Maheshwar.
